The mitzvah of birchas hamazon appears in this week's parsha. The precise placement of the mitzvah, however, is puzzling. The Torah dedicates three pesukim (Devarim8:7-9) to a description of the bounty and plentifulness of Eretz Yisroel. Then the Torah concludes, "v'achalta v'savata u'berachta es Hashem Elokecha al ha'aretz hatova asher nossan lach." The mitzvah of birchas hamazon is associated with Eretz Yisroel; and, even more remarkably, Eretz Yisroel is a focal point of birkas hamazon. After eating we thank Hakadosh Baruch Hu not only for the food but for Eretz Yisroel as well ("al ha'aretz hatova" - the second beracha of birchas hamazon.) This is puzzling because, primo facie, birchas hamazon has no connection to Eretz Yisroel. A Jew living outside of Eretz Yisroel who enjoys a meal of bread, baked from produce grown outside of Eretz Yisroel, is as obligated to "bentch". Wherein then lies the connection between birchas hamazon and Eretz Yisroel?
Towards the end of the parsha the Torah revisits the topic of Eretz Yisroel (11:10-12). In that context we read, "Eretz asher Hashem Elokecha doreish osa - Eretz Yisroel is the land about which Hashem your God inquires." Rashi, quoting Chazal, comments, "but does not Hashem inquire after all lands in the world? [The Torah means] that, as it were, Hashem inquires about Eretz Yisroel and only in that context does He inquire regarding other lands." Eretz Yisroel, in her own right, commands Hashem's attention. All other lands, as it were, latch onto Eretz Yisroel's coattails.
A full understanding of Chazal's words goes beyond the confines of this dvar Torah. Nevertheless, as elaborated by the Ramban who quotes the words of Chazal, this much is clear. Hashem showers His blessings upon Eretz Yisroel, and Eretz Yisroel becomes the source whence blessing emanates for the rest of the world. The whole world is sustained through the merit of Eretz Yisroel.
And thus out prior puzzle is solved. A Jew living in chutz la'aretz enjoying the produce of chutz la'aretz benefits from the unique blessing of Eretz Yisroel. On the physical plain he may have procured his blessing from chutz la'aretz, but on the spiritual plain his blessing comes from Eretz Yisroel.
